I am interested in exploration of my family tree and of traditions that have been forgotten after my parents migrated from Guerrero, Mexico, at a young age. I believe it is important to document my family so that future generations can continue adding their stories to the ones who have come before.
I have a longing to reconnect with my culture and my ancestors because from their stories I have found my own stories. By building a bridge from where we come from to the present moment we have a better understanding of who we are.
Something that I have been recently drawn to are the colors and texture of traditional dress, and I use oil paint and paste on canvas to mimic the texture of textiles. I want people to feel like they are witnessing intimate moments from my culture when viewing my work.
In this vein, one of the artists who has inspired me the most has been Frida Kahlo, whose work depicts her exploration of her family as well as painful and intimate moments in her life. My goal, in turn, is to inspire those who see my work to commemorate those who were here before us, and although I draw strength from the fact that I see many artists whose work has similar aims, I also hope that my oeuvre represents my own unique take toward these ends.
